It was raised over the mound which is said to contain the remains of the ancient city of Indraprastha associated with the Sanskrit Hindu epic of the Mahabharata. Its ramparts cover an area of over 2 miles (3km) and it has three main gates on the north, south and west. Archer op. cit.
